Although many drivers are interested in the functionality that an SUV has to offer, they can also be put off by the large size of some models. That is when a compact crossover SUV is the perfect option since it gives you the great utility of an SUV in a smaller package that can more easily fit into your life and daily routine. The 2022 GMC Terrain is a fantastic choice if you are interested in a compact model, as it provides you with numerous impressive features and four great trims to choose from. While this might not be a new generation for the Terrain, it has been updated and refreshed for this year, and there is an all-new trim available.

In terms of performance, the GMC Terrain has a single turbocharged engine available that makes it a lot of fun to drive. If you are concerned about fuel economy with an SUV, then the Terrain is a great choice as it gets an estimated 25 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. In the past, the GMC Terrain started with the SL trim, but this has been eliminated to make the superior SLE trim the new starting option. One of the most exciting things about the 2022 model is the addition of a new AT4 trim, which has an off-road design and focus that is perfect for enjoying your week and then hitting the trail on the weekend.

Inside the 2022 GMC Terrain, you will find a wide range of comfort and tech features to enjoy while you are behind the wheel. The standard SLE trim includes a 7-inch infotainment display and support for Wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto, plus a 4-inch color driver information display. On higher trims, you can find impressive additional features like support for Amazon Alexa, a new head-up display, and an 8-inch driver information center. Best of all, the 2022 Terrain can help protect you and your loved ones with Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and more, all standard on every model.

    The All-New Terrain AT4 Off-Road Trim

With its sleek, compact design and rugged durability, the GMC Terrain has been a popular pick for anyone who enjoys the outdoors for years. Starting with the 2022 Terrain, however, this has been improved upon significantly with an all-new off-road-focused trim: the AT4. This model might not be for everyone, but if you are interested in a compact crossover that can handle some rough terrain and let you enjoy the trail, then you should give this option a good look.

The AT4 features the same sporty engine as every other model of the 2022 GMC Terrain, which means it still gets impressive fuel economy and has plenty of power to get you around town or to your favorite campsite. One thing that sets this apart from the other Terrain trims, however, is that it comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) standard, rather than front-wheel drive (FWD). All other GMC Terrain trims feature FWD standard with AWD available, but the AT4 is only offered with AWD to live up to its off-road design. With AWD, power is sent to both axles and all four wheels, rather than only the front axle and wheels – so if your front wheels are slipping in the mud, then your rear wheels can still get traction and keep you moving.

You also get a number of great touches with the AT4 to help complement its design, like exterior black chrome accents and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. A High Definition Surround Vision system is available, which provides you with improved visibility around your vehicle at low speeds through a 360-degree display. This is perfect for handling rough terrain where you need to slow down and avoid numerous obstacles. The AT4 also comes with exclusive sport terrain tires, features front steel skid plates to protect its underside, and unique interior touches to remind you that you are in a stunning, new off-roader.

    Technology and Comfort

Since the vast majority of your time with any vehicle is going to be spent inside of it while you are driving, you always want to look at the interior and the features it has to offer. Inside the 2022 GMC Terrain, you get a fantastic combination of style, comfort, and impressive technology to make driving a lot of fun. Keep in mind that with any vehicle, including the Terrain, the features you get will depend on the trim you choose and any available options you pick. To keep things simple, let us take a look at the starting features of the GMC Terrain as well as what is available if you pick the sophisticated Denali trim.

    Base Levels of Comfort

In previous years, the Terrain started with the SL trim, but this has been dropped in favor of starting with the more impressive SLE trim for the 2022 model. The Terrain SLE comes with a 7-inch infotainment display with Bluetooth support for streaming audio and phone calls, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto capability, both standard. You get a 6-speaker sound system in the Terrain SLE, along with premium cloth seating, a steering wheel with mounted controls, and a 4-inch multi-color driver information screen. Keyless open and cruise control are both standard, as are numerous USB ports and automatic climate control.

    The Luxurious Denali Trim Features

Looking at the more advanced features of the legendary Denali trim, you get a lot of impressive upgrades to enjoy. For example, the Denali comes with a larger 8-inch driver information center along with an 8-inch infotainment display for improved visibility and functionality when looking at the screens. You get a new Head-Up Display in the Denali trim, which is an available option on most other trims, along with available support for Amazon Alexa and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Second-row seats are heated in the Denali trim, with ventilated front seats available, along with leather-appointed seating and decorative touches throughout to really enhance the elegance of the Terrain’s interior. Navigation comes standard on the Denali, though it is available on the other trims, and an available 7-speaker Bose premium sound system takes the driving experience to the next level. The Denali trim has later availability than the other 2022 GMC Terrain models, but it is certainly worth the wait.

  • Safety

A black 2022 GMC Terrain is shown from the rear driving on a two lane road.

The safety features should be one of the first things you look at for any vehicle. An impressive engine, great fuel economy, gorgeous interior features, and everything else is all meaningless if a car, truck, or SUV cannot help keep you and others safe on the road. Fortunately, the 2022 GMC Terrain has some of the most impressive standard and available safety features we have ever seen, making this a terrific pick for any driver.

    GMC Pro Safety

Every model comes with the GMC Pro Safety package standard, which includes a Forward Collision Alert to warn you when a potential collision is detected and Automatic Emergency Braking to help you stop to mitigate or avoid a collision. This package also includes a Lane Keep Assist feature with a Lane Departure Warning to alert you when you seem to be drifting out of your lane and help you stay in it. A Following Distance Indicator is standard to warn you when you are too close to a vehicle in front of you, and you also get IntelliBeam automatic high beams that come on automatically in darkness and switch off when oncoming traffic is detected.

    GMC Pro Safety Plus

There is an available GMC Pro Safety Plus package with advanced safety features, which comes standard on the Denali trim. This includes all of the standard technology, along with a Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert to warn you when someone is in your blind spot, and you begin to change lanes toward them. You also get a Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist with this package, which warns you when someone is passing behind you or when there is an object in your way when parking. While cruise control is standard on all models, this package upgrades it to Adaptive Cruise Control that can adjust your speed automatically to maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and one in front of you.
