For years, the GMC Sierra 1500 has been one of the most impressive and sophisticated trucks on the road, offering a truly premium experience with the power to handle anything you need it to do. With the new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, this truck has been refreshed and boosted with additional trims and features that leave every other truck in its dust. Whether you are interested in a workhorse that can play as hard as it works, a great off-road machine that can conquer the trail, or a luxurious mobile office with impressive towing and payload while giving you the tools you need to stay connected, the GMC Sierra has you covered.

In terms of power and performance, at first glance, it seems like the 2022 GMC Sierra has many of the same engines as last year’s model. While there are four options available, some of them have been boosted and improved for superior performance. For example, the now-standard 2.7L engine has been enhanced to deliver 20% more torque than last year’s model, giving you up to 420 lb-ft for amazing performance. The Duramax Turbo Diesel continues to deliver fantastic torque, and improvements to the chassis mean it can now tow 4,000 lbs more than previous Sierra models with the diesel engine.

Perhaps the biggest improvements to the updated 2022 model are found inside, however, where this gorgeous truck is now more luxurious and technologically advanced than ever before. The luxurious Denali and off-road-focused AT4 have been joined by the Denali Ultimate and AT4X, which offer even more impressive features. For example, while the standard Denali includes a 13-inch infotainment display, 12-inch digital driver display, and 15-inch head-up display, the Denali Ultimate adds to this with a 12-speaker Bose premium Centerpoint surround sound system. Super Cruise is now available on the Denali trim, while the Denali Ultimate comes with GM’s impressive hands-free driving technology standard.

  • Engines

When you are looking at any vehicle, you always want to choose one with an engine that is powerful enough to make it an enjoyable and practical driving experience. We would argue that this is even more important with something like a full-size truck, however, since the engine plays a huge role in getting the kind of power and capability you need. Not only does the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 offer fantastic performance and reliability, but there are four different engines, so you can get exactly the right level of power for what you need.

    The 2.7L Turbo and 5.3L V8

The standard engine on the starting Pro trim, as well as the SLE and Elevation trims, is a 2.7L Turbo High-Output. This enhanced version of the 2.7L has been retuned and improved upon the engine in previous years, now delivering 20% more torque than last year. This means it provides 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There is also an available 5.3L V8 engine, which comes standard on the SLT and Denali trims and is available on lower trims; it offers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with a 10-speed automatic for a bold and responsive drive.

    The Duramax and 6.2L V8

A 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine is once again available, providing 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes standard on the AT4 trim and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Finally, if you want the highest level of performance possible, then there is a 6.2L V8 engine that comes standard on the Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims and is available on the standard Denali, AT4, and SLT trims. This engine delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, with a 10-speed automatic that means it is not only incredibly powerful but also highly responsive and a lot of fun to drive.

  • Capability

Powerful engines and great interior features are important in a truck these days, but few things are as vital as the kind of work your truck can handle. For most of us, this comes down to towing capacity and payload capability for your pickup: which refer to how much weight you can pull behind you and how much weight you can load onto your truck. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is more powerful than ever, especially if you are interested in the available diesel engine.

    How Much Can It Tow?

In terms of towing, the engine you choose is going to be one of the most important considerations. Not only does your engine impact general performance, but it affects how much weight you can haul behind you. Your choice of either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive will also impact this, so remember to look at the details of any specific truck and configuration you are interested in. If you choose a setup designed for optimal towing power, then each engine can handle the following weights:

    • 2.7L Turbo: Up to 9,400 lbs
    • 5.3L V8: Up to 11,200 lbs
    • 6.2L V8: Up to 13,000 lbs
    • 3.0L Diesel: Up to 13,200 lbs

As you can see, the differences in maximum towing capacity can vary quite a lot – up to nearly 4,000 lbs – depending on the engine you pick. It should be noted that the incredible capability of the diesel engine is significantly improved from previous years, thanks to a new design that allows it to be picked with the available Max Trailering package. Last year, the diesel topped out at 9,200 lbs, but this new design has made it the most capable engine for the Sierra. If you choose the diesel engine and a four-wheel drive model, then you can still get up to 13,000 lbs of towing capacity, making it the best-in-class 4WD diesel towing option on the market.

    How Much Can It Haul?

In terms of payload, the engine you pick and the configuration you choose are both important since these change how much weight the truck can handle on its frame, and the weight of the engine impacts this. Choosing two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive also has a big impact on payload, so keep that in mind as you consider your options. Maximum payload goes up to 2,240 pounds when optioned with the regular cab and two-wheel drive.

Just remember that the size of the box on the 2022 GMC Sierra is important too, with short, standard, and long boxes available on various cabs. With no less than 83.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the available long box, the 2022 Sierra has the most cargo volume of any pickup in its class. Ultimately, it is best to know what you need and then look at the specifics of the setup you are interested in to see if it will work for you for both towing and payload.

  • Interior

The dashboard, steering wheel, and infotainment screen are shown in a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500.

Although the updates for the new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 include boosted engines for greater performance and more towing than ever before, many of the best improvements can be found inside the cabin. The Sierra has long been known as one of the most luxurious and sophisticated trucks on the road, but with this year’s update, it is better than ever. We can honestly say this is the most advanced and comfortable GMC Sierra we have ever seen.

    Designed for Comfort

In terms of comfort, not only has the transmission been improved to provide a more responsive ride, but the interior has been updated with advanced features. First among them are available 16-way power front seats that include a massage feature. These are some of the most comfortable seats in any truck out there – they come standard on the Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims, and they are optional on other trims.

The interior is more refined and luxurious than ever before, with available features that include Alpine Umber seating with full-grain leather and plaited contrast stitching that is elegant and gorgeous. Authentic open-pore Paldao wood across the interior brings a new level of luxury, including a topographical map of Mt. Denali’s summit that is laser-etched and embossed across the front dashboard.

    Advanced Technology at Your Fingertips

Comfort is one thing, but this is also one of the most functional interiors we have ever seen, thanks to the advanced technology packed into it. This includes an available 13.4-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch driver information center, and an available 15-inch head-up display projected onto the windshield for more than 40 inches of total display area for the driver. Add an available 12-speaker Bose premium Centerpoint surround sound system, and you have a driving experience beyond anything else out there. Best of all, GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system is now available on the GMC Sierra, and it includes support for hands-free towing and driving on more than 200,000 miles of roads in the US and Canada.
