When you think of Malibu, you are reminded of one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world. There is nothing like watching the sun set over the Pacific from Malibu beach, which may be why Chevrolet chose this name for its sporty yet classy midsize sedan. The 2022 Chevy Malibu carries on this tradition, giving drivers a roomy five-passenger sedan with a choice of two turbocharged engines that will provide you with the speed and acceleration you desire whether you are cruising the Pacific Coast Highway or just getting your kicks on Route 66. This is why naming its midsize sedan after the funky but chic coastal village of Malibu makes perfect sense.

The 2022 Chevy Malibu is part of the ninth generation of a model that made its debut in 1964. Chevy continued to build the Malibu until taking a 14-year break after the 1983 model year. When Chevy brought the Malibu back in 1997, it was given a sportier look with front-wheel drive to provide better performance and stability over the older rear-wheel drive models. The ninth-generation model was introduced in 2016 with a body that is sleeker than anything Chevy had ever put on a sedan. Clearly, the engineers at Chevrolet had taken the company’s expertise in building sports cars like the Corvette and Camaro and applied it to the midsize sedan. Building off the ninth generation’s styling, Chevy has improved the fuel economy and safety features by applying incremental innovation to create the best model ever in the 2022 Malibu.

  • Performance

A white 2022 Chevy Malibu is shown from the front driving on a city street.

You get a choice of two incredible turbocharged engines on the 2022 Chevy Malibu. The base engine is a 1.5-liter Turbo Inline 4-cylinder gas engine. This comes standard on all models of the Malibu except for the top-trim Premier. This engine features an aluminum block and head with 16 valves in a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) configuration. It uses variable valve timing to improve fuel efficiency and direct fuel injection to boost performance, making it capable of 160 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 184 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.

The 2022 Chevy Malibu Premier features a larger engine. This 2.0-liter Turbo 4-cylinder gas engine also utilizes direct injection and variable valve timing like the base 1.5-liter engine. It also has an aluminum block and head with 16 valves in a DOHC configuration. However, it surpasses the 1.5-liter engine in performance, delivering 250 horsepower at 5300 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm.

Interestingly enough, Chevy has chosen two different transmissions to go with the two engines on the 2022 Malibu. The 1.5-liter Turbo I-4 is paired with a continuous variable transmission (CVT). Rather than have set gear speeds, the CVT constantly adjusts the gear ratio to road and driving conditions. This will give the Malibu more efficient performance. The Malibu Premier model with the 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 gets a Hydra-Matic 9-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission. This will give you greater control, although it is slightly inefficient when compared to the CVT. This is in keeping with the desire to make the Malibu Premier more of a sports performance model of this midsize sedan.

    Fuel Economy

One of the standout features of the 2022 Chevy Malibu is its exceptional fuel economy. This applies no matter which powertrain combination you choose. If you buy a 2022 Malibu with the 1.5-liter Turbo I-4 and CVT, you can expect to get an estimated 29 miles per gallon in city driving, 36 miles per gallon on the highway, and 32 miles per gallon combined. The Malibu Premier, with its larger 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 and the 9-speed automatic transmission, gets slightly lower gas mileage: 22 miles per gallon in the city, 33 miles per gallon on the highway, and 26 miles per gallon combined. This makes the Malibu with the 1.5-liter Turbo I-4 the better choice if you are looking to use your car for commuting since you will get better fuel economy.

    Handling and Ride

All 2022 Malibu models are front-wheel drive only. This will give you solid handling and is one of the reasons why this car gets such incredible fuel economy numbers. The electric rack and pinion steering system will give you a great feel for the road, and the 111.4-inch wheelbase will provide stability on the road. The 37-foot turning radius on the Malibu should allow even the most inexperienced driver to get the car into and out of tight parallel parking spaces.

The suspension system on the 2022 Malibu will give you and your passengers a very comfortable ride. The MacPherson strut independent front suspension will give you solid handling even over rough pavement, while the four-link rear suspension with gas-charged struts and coil springs will do a great job of absorbing road irregularities. There are front and rear stabilizer bars to give you improved cornering around tight curves, with the standard StabiliTrak providing improved traction.

    A Sporty Sedan

While you won’t confuse the 2022 Malibu with a Corvette, it does have very good acceleration. The model with the 1.5-liter Turbo I-4 will get you from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 7.8 seconds with a top speed of 130 miles per hour. The Malibu Premier with the larger 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 will easily meet and exceed these numbers.

  • Interior

The tan interior and rear seats are shown in a 2022 Chevy Malibu.

The 2022 Chevy Malibu gives you plenty of trunk space with a full 15.7 cubic feet for your belongings. This will come in handy whether you plan on taking your Malibu out for a road trip or just a simple trip to the local grocery store. It is a tribute to the designers at Chevrolet that this midsize sedan has so much room for your stuff.

    Passenger Space

The 2022 Malibu can seat up to five passengers comfortably. This is because Chevrolet has given the 2022 Malibu almost 103 cubic feet of space in the passenger compartment. The front row features bucket seats, while the rear row is a 60/40-split bench seat. The rear row manually folds down, giving you additional cargo space if necessary. This will allow you to slide long objects from the trunk forward.

Chevy has done a great job apportioning space between the front and rear seats so that you don’t have to worry about your passengers fighting over who gets to ride shotgun. This makes the Malibu a great choice as a family car. While there are 41.5-inches of legroom in the front row of seats, the passengers in the back will enjoy 38.1-inches of legroom. This will allow everyone to stretch out comfortably, even on long rides. Similarly, you get almost the same amount of shoulder room and hip room in both rows, with 58.5-inches of shoulder room and 54.1-inches of hip room in the front, and 57.1-inches and 53.4-inches in the back. Finally, there is 39.1-inches of headroom in the front row and 37.5-inches of headroom in the back. This means that the 2022 Chevy Malibu should be able to accommodate even the tallest drivers and passengers.

  • Technology

Apps are shown in the infotainment screen in a 2022 Chevy Malibu.

Chevy has used technology to set the 2022 Malibu apart from other midsize sedans in its vehicle class. This is seen in three different ways: safety, infotainment, and Teen Driver.

    Safety Systems

Each 2022 Malibu comes equipped with a set of airbags, a Rear Vision camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system. In addition, Chevy offers certain Chevy Safety Assist driver-assist technologies on the 2022 Malibu. Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert will help you change lanes by letting you know if there is another vehicle in your Malibu’s blind spot. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning will let you know if your Malibu is drifting out of your lane and then apply slight steering adjustments to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Forward Collision Alert will let you know if there is an imminent collision with a vehicle in front of you so you can take evasive action. This will also activate the available Automatic Emergency Braking, which will engage the Malibu’s brakes to either avoid the crash or minimize its impact. Front Pedestrian Braking will automatically engage if the system detects a pedestrian in front of you. Finally, Rear Cross Traffic Alert alert will work with the Rear Vision camera to make sure you can safely back out of a parking space without hitting a pedestrian or another vehicle. While each of these features is optional, adding them to your Malibu will make your ride even safer.

The 2022 Malibu features the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with an 8-inch diagonal color touchscreen. This seamlessly integrates key vehicle information with entertainment features like a 6-speaker audio system. In addition, you get standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on your 2022 Malibu, as well as Bluetooth connectivity for up to two devices, so you and your passengers will have no problem staying connected no matter where you go. In addition, by having wireless connectivity, you no longer have to fumble with smartphone cables when you want to hook your device up to your Chevy Infotainment 3 system.

The 2022 Malibu Premier adds built-in navigation. This model also adds a 9-speaker Bose premium audio system. This will make your music sound even better when you go out cruising in your Malibu.

    Teen Driver

Chevy has included its Teen Driver system on all models of the 2022 Malibu. This makes sense since the Malibu is a great first car for the new driver in your family. The Teen Driver acts as a chaperone so you can make sure your young driver is driving safely. It allows you to limit certain features on the Malibu, including the volume on the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. Teen Driver also lets you make sure that your young driver cannot disable certain safety systems and adds Buckle-to-Drive so they cannot put the Malibu into gear without fastening their seat belt. When your young driver returns home, the Teen Driver system will give you an in-vehicle report card so you can make sure they are following the rules. With Teen Driver, you don’t need to be in the Malibu to make sure your rules, and those of the road, are being followed by your youngster.
