  • Overview

A great truck should have a lot to offer: power, performance, a spacious interior and bed, and fantastic features both inside and out. If you want a pickup that really takes all of these things to the highest level, then the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 is a terrific option. This is a full-size, heavy-duty truck that represents the penultimate level of capability and performance in the GMC Sierra truck lineup – just behind the Sierra 3500. That makes it the perfect choice if you find that the standard Sierra 1500 does not quite have the power you require, but you also do not need what the 3500 offers.

One of the best things about the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 is just how much freedom and flexibility it gives you in getting the perfect combination of features. For starters, there are five different configuration options for you to choose from, with three different cab sizes and two bed lengths to combine. You also have five different trims levels, two engines, two drivetrains, and various other options to pick from as you consider the Sierra 2500. So no matter what you are looking for, you can get what you need, such as the AT4 trim that includes an off-road suspension.

In terms of performance, the Sierra 2500 is one of the most powerful and impressive trucks available from GMC. Its full capabilities will depend on the engine and configuration you choose, but it can handle up to 18,510 lbs of towing when properly configured or have up to 3,979 lbs of payload capacity. That makes the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 a terrific option for a work truck, which is no surprise given its heavy-duty design while also providing you with amazing options that are great for both work and play.

    Engines and Performance

When you are looking at a powerful, hard-working truck, you always want to see that it has a great engine. Fortunately, the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 has two impressive engines for you to choose from. Deciding on which one is right for you will depend on a number of factors, including how much power you need. Both engines are available with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, so keep that in mind.

The standard engine on the GMC Sierra 2500 is a 6.6L V8 gas engine that delivers up to 401 hp and up to 464 lb-ft of torque. This comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which gives you a solid driving experience, and it is the perfect option for a lot of drivers. If you want something with more power, however, then there is an available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine available, which provides up to 445 hp and up to 910 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with a 10-speed Allison transmission. This really is a massively powerful engine, and that torque makes a big difference for towing or if you find yourself driving in areas with a lot of inclines.

  • Capability

One of the biggest reasons to choose a truck is for the impressive towing and payload capabilities it can offer. When looking at a heavy-duty pickup like the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500, you expect really impressive amounts of power. The maximum limits for this truck will depend on a number of different factors, so make sure you look at the specifics for any particular model you are interested in.

    Towing and Payload

Since there are two different engines available, one gas and the other diesel, we will look at what kind of capabilities you can get with each option. In terms of towing, you can get up to 14,500 lbs of maximum conventional towing with the standard gas engine or up to 17,370 lbs of maximum fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing. If you choose the available diesel engine, then you can get up to 18,510 lbs of maximum conventional, fifth-wheel, and gooseneck towing as long as you choose the right configuration with the optimal trailering equipment.

The maximum payload will depend not only on the engine you choose but also on a number of other factors. With the standard gas engine, the maximum you can get for payload is 3,976 pounds. If you go with the available diesel engine and the same configuration, then you can get up to 3,715 lbs of maximum payload capacity. By comparison, when properly configured, the GMC Sierra 1500 can handle up to 11,800 lbs of towing capacity or up to 2,200 lbs of maximum payload.

  • Trims & Features

When you are shopping for a new truck, it is important to choose a model that gives you a lot of flexibility so you can get all of the features you need. One of the things we love most about the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 is how many combinations of features and options it has to offer.

    Configurations

For starters, there are five different possible configurations for you to choose from, and all of them have both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive available. You can choose a regular cab with a long bed, a double cab with a standard bed, or a double cab with a long bed. There are also options for a crew cab, which gives you a lot more interior space for rear-seat passengers, with either a standard or long bed. The standard bed measures about 82 inches in length, while the long bed is just over 98 inches long.

    Trims

Within these different configurations, you then have five different trim levels available. The starting Sierra trim features a 7-inch infotainment system, LED headlamps and tail lamps, 17-inch steel wheels, and a wide range of available options. Going up from there, you can choose the SLE trim, which has an 8-inch infotainment display, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

The SLT trim has the ProGrade Trailering System as a standard feature, with heated 10-way power-adjustable front seats and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. There is also an available AT4 trim with an off-road focus that includes an off-road suspension, twin-tube Rancho shocks, and skid plates to protect the underside with 18-inch all-terrain tires. Finally, the Denali trim includes the MultiPro six-function tailgate, a premium infotainment system with Navigation, and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. Both the AT4 and Denali trims are only available with four-wheel drive to support the high level of performance they offer.

    Great Work Features

If you are looking for a next-level work truck, then the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 is an amazing choice. It features an available ProGrade Trailering System that includes a hitch view and hitch guidance system to make connecting to a trailer easy, with an in-vehicle trailering app that makes towing as simple and safe as possible. There is also a wide range of safety features and interior technology available, including Front and Rear Park Assist, a Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking, and a customizable 8-inch digital driver information center.

The six-function MultiPro Tailgate is one of the finest work accessories we have ever seen on a truck. It has a primary gate, as you would expect, as well as a load stop for the primary gate and a fold-down inner gate for easier access while loading and unloading. The MultiPro Tailgate also features a full-width step so you can get in and out of the bed more easily, an inner gate load stop to secure second-tier items in the bed, and an inner-gate work surface so you can keep the primary gate shut and have a surface to use. This really sets a new bar for work functionality from a tailgate, and it can make your life a lot easier on a job site.
