  • Overview

A white 2021 GMC Canyon is angled left.

For some people, a truck is a truck, and there is very little reason to think too much about which model is right for them. But for serious truck fans, there is a ton of difference between each model, and choosing the right pickup is all about looking at options and getting just what you need. The 2021 GMC Canyon is a midsize truck that offers a fantastic combination of performance, luxury, and muscle to help you with work, play, and everything in between. If a full-size truck like the GMC Sierra is larger than what you really need, then give the Canyon a good look to see everything it has to offer.

There are three different engines available for the 2021 GMC Canyon, including two different standard gas engines and a turbo-diesel option. This gives you a tremendous amount of freedom to get the right amount of power for what you need, without settling for something that is too weak or going overboard. And with three different body and bed configurations available to you, you have a lot of freedom that lets you really customize the Canyon to be the midsize truck you want. When properly configured, the 2021 Canyon gives you 7,700 lbs of towing capacity, letting it tackle a wide range of projects.

For the first time ever, the off-road-focused AT4 trim is available for the 2021 GMC Canyon. This gives you an amazing option for leaving the city behind and hitting the trail or spending the day boating and fishing on the river. And yet, that amazing off-road performance does not come at the expense of GMC's reputation for luxury, so you can enjoy a sophisticated ride while enjoying your time in nature. Come visit us at Coyle Chevrolet Buick GMC today to find out more, and we will help you find the perfect pickup for whatever you need.

  • Performance

A white 2021 GMC Canyon is off-roading on a path toward mountains.

Since the engine is essentially the beating heart of your vehicle, it is important to get the right amount of power from the engine in your truck. With some models out there, you only have one engine available on the truck – if it is powerful enough, then you are fine, but if not, then you can be left wishing for greater performance. There are three engines to choose from with the 2021 GMC Canyon, which gives you the freedom to pick which one is right for you without throwing too many options at you.

    Engine Options

The starting engine for the Canyon is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that offers 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and it includes variable valve timing to help boost its power and efficiency. If you want something with greater performance, then there is a 3.6L V6 engine available, which delivers 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes standard on higher trims and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which gives you a smooth driving experience and plenty of power for anything you need.

Although the available 3.6L V6 engine is the best choice for the greatest horsepower, there is a third option if you want more torque and greater towing capacity. The 2.8L 4-cylinder Turbo-Diesel engine provides 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the 2021 GMC Canyon has its greatest available towing capacity, and it is your best option if a diesel engine is what you are most interested in. Since finding a diesel engine on a midsize truck is pretty rare these days, it makes the Canyon really stand out among its competition.

    Off-Roading

For the first time, the 2021 GMC Canyon includes the AT4 off-road-focused trim, so if you want a midsize truck that is great on the trail, it is a fantastic choice. This trim is available with either cloth or leather seating inside, so you can choose the kind of luxury you want when you are going off-road. No matter which one you pick, you get amazing off-road features, including the powerful 3.6L V6 engine and 4x4 standard, along with an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case and a transfer case shield to protect it against debris.

The Canyon AT4 includes an automatic locking rear differential, frame-mounted recovery hooks, and hill descent control to help you maintain speed when going downhill without riding the brakes. It also features off-road-tuned suspension, an available diesel engine if you want optimal towing power, and 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires for great performance off-road. The AT4 brings a new level of off-road performance to GMC's all-ready capable midsize truck.

  • Towing and Payload

A white 2021 GMC Canyon is in snow with a red bike on racks in the bed.

For a lot of truck owners, towing and payload capacities are incredibly important. After all, one of the main reasons to own a truck is for the great functionality they provide by being able to load up the bed with stuff you need to take with you or hook up a trailer or camper and do some towing. Since it is a midsize truck, the Canyon does not have massive towing compared to larger, full-size models, but it does an excellent job for many tasks.

    Towing

The maximum towing capacity you can get with the 2021 GMC Canyon depends on which engine you choose since this directly impacts the kind of power your truck has. If you go with the standard 2.5L I4 engine, for example, then you can get a maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs no matter what configuration you choose for the truck. The available 3.6L V6 engine is much better, with up to 7,000 lbs of towing capacity available for any configuration. But if you want the greatest towing possible, then the available 2.8L diesel engine will give you at least 7,500 lbs of towing and up to 7,700 lbs when properly configured.

    Payload

Your maximum payload with the 2021 GMC Canyon also depends on the engine you choose, as well as the cabin and bed configuration that you pick. The standard engine and the turbo-diesel will both give you about 1,400 lbs of maximum payload – it can vary a bit depending on configuration, but not by much. For the best payload possible, the available 3.6L V6 engine can easily give you more than 1,500 lbs of payload, with nearly 1,600 lbs of maximum payload possible with the right configuration.

  • Interior

When looking at interior features on a vehicle, the trim you choose is going to make a big difference in what is included. For example, the Elevation Standard trim of the 2021 GMC Canyon includes a 7-inch infotainment display, a 6-speaker audio system, and cloth seats. It also features a 3-inch monochromatic driver information display, single-zone climate control, and a manual day/night rearview mirror. Unlike most full-size trucks, all trims of the midsize Canyon come standard with front bucket seats.

    Denali Luxury

If you look at the features of the highest trim for the 2021 GMC Canyon, which is the incredibly sophisticated Denali, then you find even more luxury and advanced technology. The Denali features an 8-inch infotainment display with navigation, HD Radio, and a Bose premium audio system with incredible sound quality. It has leather-appointed seating, with heated and ventilated front seats, which include a 6-way power driver's seat and a 4-way power front passenger seat.

You also get power lumbar control for the front seats, along with a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls for audio, cruise control, and more. The Denali has a 4-inch color driver information center, remote start and keyless entry, and numerous USB ports in the front and rear of the cab. You also get a wireless charging pad for compatible devices, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and driver and passenger-side microphones to improve sound quality when using a hands-free phone while driving.
