For many people, a midsize SUV represents the perfect balance of size, power, and functionality to give you that “just right” middle-ground between compact and full-size models. Even if you know that a midsize SUV is right for you, however, choosing the perfect model can still be tricky since there are so many available. It often helps to take a look at two specific options to see how they compare, such as the 2022 Chevy Blazer vs 2022 Ford Edge. While there is no denying that the Edge has a lot going for it, there are some key differences between these vehicles that give the Chevy Blazer the advantage.
For a lot of drivers, fuel efficiency is one of the biggest concerns with an SUV; while a midsize model might not be able to match the gas mileage of a compact crossover, they can still be quite efficient. By comparison, with its standard setup, the Ford Edge gets an estimated 21 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined fuel efficiency. Those numbers might not seem like a huge difference, but they are certain to add up over time, especially as you look at the combined gas mileage. This means that someone doing a lot of driving around town and using the highway as needed will end up stopping for gas much more often with the Ford model.
Many people immediately think of a pickup truck when talking about towing capacity, yet many SUVs can also pull a fair amount of weight behind them. Not every midsize model is designed with towing in mind, but Chevy and Ford have built these two SUVs for use with a trailer. You will not find the kind of muscle here that you will with a full-size truck like the Chevy Silverado 1500, but they both deliver on pretty impressive overall capability––though once again, the Blazer takes the lead.
Even though the Ford Edge has two different engines available, they both offer the same level of towing capacity, which is a bit disappointing. With its standard four-cylinder engine, the Edge can pull up to 3,500 lbs––but even if you pay a lot more for the more-powerful V6 option, that is still as good as the Ford Edge can manage. Towing up to 3,500 lbs is decent, but considering the higher price of the Edge, we would expect it to deliver greater towing capability.
With the Chevy Blazer, you get exactly what you would expect: impressive towing ability with the base engine and boosted performance with the optional V6. Equipped with its standard four-cylinder, the Blazer can handle up to 3,500 lbs of towing capacity, just like the Ford Edge. However, if you choose the available 3.6L V6 engine in the Blazer, you can get 4,500 lbs of maximum towing when properly equipped. That is not a minor increase; 1,000 lbs of additional towing can make a huge difference, especially if you have a boat to haul or a trailer that you like to load up with furniture while antiquing.
As you are looking at different options for your next vehicle, it is easy to get wrapped up in details like horsepower, interior space, and fuel economy. All of those are important and can impact your daily driving experience, but often the single most vital detail is the price of a vehicle (even though that is the last thing some people look at). After all, if a vehicle does not fit your budget, then it does not matter what sort of features or options it has. It is important that you consider the price of a vehicle you are interested in, as well as the prices of various trims, to find something that really meets your needs.
In this regard, the 2022 Chevy Blazer once again comes out on top as it not only starts at a lower price compared to the 2022 Ford Edge, but stays there across trim levels. Sometimes, as you look at different models between brands, the prices can be very comparable. While the Ford Edge is certainly a fine option in its own right, there are simply a few things the Chevy Blazer does better. Gas mileage from a midsize model is not always amazing, which makes the refined efficiency of the Blazer all the more impressive and really sets it apart. Both of these SUVs have a pair of engines to offer, but the greater towing capacity of the Blazer puts it ahead, especially if you have a boat or trailer you plan on using regularly.
