GMC’s origins lie with the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan. A suburb of Detroit, Pontiac has played host to an enormous amount of General Motors history, not least of which the founding of a small commercial truck manufacturer called Rapid in 1902. Rapid was among a spate of companies rushing to produce the first wave of widely available commercial trucks in America, but unlike the rest of the local competition, they got to market first.
Rapid sold their second truck to a garment cleaning company, and that truck was likely the first gasoline-powered commercial vehicle in operational use in Detroit. From there, things moved quickly. In 1909, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was acquired by General Motors and merged with some other companies that had also been recently bought up by the GM juggernaut. In 1912 the resulting amalgamation of commercial truck manufacturers was dubbed GMC by General Motors, and the moniker has stuck ever since. From the start, GMC produced interesting vehicles and even more interesting stories.
In the 1910s, gasoline had not yet become completely dominant as a form of fuel, and essentially from its inception, GMC was also producing electric trucks for professional work. These very early electric vehicles were built in Owosso, Michigan. This small town far from Detroit would unknowingly play a part in the beginning of GMC’s electric truck legacy, something which would be restarted with a vengeance over a century later.
Among the many publicity stunts that early GMC models would complete were multiple cross-country treks over the atrocious roads of the era. The year 1916 saw a GMC truck hurtle through muddy tracks and trek over 9,500 miles round trip on a literal milk run across the country. Driving from Seattle to New York and then back to Seattle again via a southerly route, the couple piloting the GMC Model 31 truck reported zero mechanical failures during the entire trip. By this point, GMC had proven themselves to be professional grade. The company was soon building large numbers of vehicles for the US military and other high-profile operators who needed vehicles they could count on.

These days, GMC remains a potent player in the truck market, and as Indiana’s leading GMC dealer, we carry the full lineup of GMC cars, trucks, and vans. Whatever you are looking for, GMC has a reliable and capable model that will meet your needs.
The full-size Sierra pickup has been one of GMC’s best-selling models for over three decades now, with a mix of raw capability and reliable comfort that the wider market struggles to match. Like the rest of the GMC line, the Sierra is blessed with General Motors engines, including derivatives of the legendary small-block V8s that have proven to be one of the most sought-after mass production engines in history. Hauling, towing, cruising, and powering ahead are all natural states of being for the continually capable Sierra.
The Acadia is GMC’s larger crossover and mixes elegance with purposefulness in both its styling and engineering. The Acadia is a purpose-built family hauler and is meant to convey people in safety and comfort over long distances. It does this by being sumptuously appointed and solidly built, along with having the latest driver aids. While the passenger rows are more than comfortable enough to fall asleep in on long journeys, thanks to the excellent driving position and great seats, even the diver will always leave the Acadia feeling more rested than when they entered.
Dependability and luxury very rarely go together as completely as they do in the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. These full-size SUVs have the V8 power and body-on-frame design desired by operators such as law enforcement agencies yet also offer ample interior room and plush seating. A more complete package is impossible to find in another full-size SUV for this price. The Yukon is a serious machine that can be configured to suit an individual buyer’s needs, while the larger Yukon XL provides even more internal space for passengers and cargo.
The GMC Terrain may, in effect, be the “baby” GMC in terms of size, but it is no less capable in its designed purpose. The Terrain is a small crossover built to move a moderate amount of passengers and cargo around tight spaces. Great for city dwellers who still prefer to have the power and capability of an SUV, the Terrain makes quick work of small parking spots and dense traffic.
The GMC Canyon is all the truck most drivers will ever need, at a bargain price and with sharp modern styling. The Canyon is just as tough as the larger Sierra but comes with a much smaller price tag and footprint. More nimble than a full-size pickup and still packing a punch in terms of power and capability, for many, the Canyon is the perfect setup. Not to mention, properly optioning this agile truck can transform it into an off-road machine.
Finally, the Hummer EV is labeled as a Supertruck for a reason. Possessing extreme performance and cartoonishly capable off-road, the Hummer EV represents not just the future of off-roading but the future of the automotive industry as a whole. With a litany of special abilities previously seen only in movies or video games, the Hummer EV is turning science fiction into science fact.
