Chevy History and Overview

William Durant was a savvy businessman who knew the value of failure. Just months after establishing General Motors, he set his sights on purchasing Ford and agreed to pay $2 million in cash and $4 million with interest over three years. Durant’s timing, however, was bad as the bank refused his $2 million loan due to the financial panic of 1910. In turn, Durant lost his title at General Motors.

Refusing to give up, Durant teamed up with retired racecar driver Louis Chevrolet. Together, the duo used their experience to design a high-performance vehicle that was both affordable and reliable. The Chevrolet Motor Car Company was born in 1911, and the Series C Classic Six debuted a year later. The model offered rare luxuries like an electric starter and electric headlamps, setting a precedent for the Chevy brand and its future in America.

With the Classic Six priced higher than what most Americans could afford, Durant realigned the company to produce more affordable vehicles; Chevrolet disagreed and left his position. Durant’s vision proved to be right, and Chevrolet quickly established itself as one of the most popular brands in America. Its reputation was solid––Chevrolet was known for adopting innovative technology before anyone else and was renowned for its in-house engines like the small-block V8 that forever sealed the automaker’s place in the industry.

Today, Chevrolet’s reputation is stronger than ever thanks to iconic speed demons like the Corvette and Camaro, longstanding SUVs like the Tahoe and Suburban, and workhorses like the Silverado. These models, among countless others, continue to earn Chevy its place as one of America’s “Big Three” automakers. They also represent everything the iconic bowtie stands for: reliability, durability, capability, versatility, and innovation.

Chevrolet Awards and Accolades

Chevrolet is no stranger to praise, with its entire lineup heavily awarded year after year. These awards rate everything from performance and value to safety, the cost to own, and beyond. More importantly, honors from outlets like the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, US News, Car and Driver, and Kelley Blue Book are not given freely, which means every Chevrolet with these honors is more than deserving.

Car and Driver is one of the most reputable outlets in the industry, and that’s why so many people turn to the organization’s “10Best” list year after year. The Car and Driver team narrows the market of over 300 vehicles by evaluating the top contenders to give readers the 10 best models that offer exceptional value, are fun to drive, and completely fulfill their purpose. The Corvette and Camaro frequently make the list, which says a lot about these two Chevy icons.

Kelley Blue Book is another reputable source in the industry that’s known for giving users a no-frills approach to a vehicle’s value. When Kelley Blue Book hands out awards for resale value and cost to own, people pay attention. You’ll find plenty of Chevrolets with these honors like the Tahoe named “Best Family Car,” the Colorado named “Best Buy,” and the Spark, Camaro, Colorado, and Silverado honored with “Cost to Own” Awards.

Two of the most important awards to look for when shopping for any vehicle are top honors from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These honors showcase the vehicle’s exceptional safety and driver-assist tools that actively minimize the potential for collision and optimize the safety of you and your passengers. You’ll find plenty of high safety ratings across the Chevy fleet from the 2021 Bolt EV (NHTSA 5-Star) and the 2021 Camaro (NHTSA 5-Star) to the 2021 Malibu (NHTSA 4-Star), 2021 Trailblazer (IIHS Top Safety Pick+), and the 2021 Traverse (NHTSA 5-Star).
