William Durant was a savvy businessman who knew the value of failure. Just months after establishing General Motors, he set his sights on purchasing Ford and agreed to pay $2 million in cash and $4 million with interest over three years. Durant’s timing, however, was bad as the bank refused his $2 million loan due to the financial panic of 1910. In turn, Durant lost his title at General Motors.

Refusing to give up, Durant teamed up with retired racecar driver Louis Chevrolet. Together, the duo used their experience to design a high-performance vehicle that was both affordable and reliable. The Chevrolet Motor Car Company was born in 1911, and the Series C Classic Six debuted a year later. The model offered rare luxuries like an electric starter and electric headlamps, setting a precedent for the Chevy brand and its future in America.

With the Classic Six priced higher than what most Americans could afford, Durant realigned the company to produce more affordable vehicles; Chevrolet disagreed and left his position. Durant’s vision proved to be right, and Chevrolet quickly established itself as one of the most popular brands in America.
