The TurboMax™ engine is a popular choice for both diesel and V8 enthusiasts. It produces more torque than the Ford 2.7L EcoBoost, with 430 lb.-ft. compared to Ford's 400. This engine combines powerful performance with unmatched durability. Its unique dual-volute turbocharger provides on-demand torque, allowing for smooth power delivery and superior towing capacity.

Diesel Engine Technology

Turbocharged engines are under more stress than naturally aspirated engines, so the TurboMax™ engine is built with diesel-specific technologies to help it handle the load. These technologies include tri-metal rod bearings, pistons with a completely machined crown, and a cast-iron ring carrier that supports a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coated steel top ring. This design ensures that the TurboMax™ engine is up to take on heavy loads with turbocharged power.

Design and Build

Long-lasting durability is built on careful attention to detail. For example, the chain drives are designed to last the entire life of the engine. The hydraulic tensioners help reduce high loads and stress on the chain drive systems, which helps to prevent those chains from wearing out prematurely.

The lower crankcase extension also contributes to durability. It helps to support the main bearing caps to handle the heavy loads associated with turbocharging. These various systems help keep the engine's parts strong and durable.

Thermal Conductivity

Turbocharged engines tend to operate at higher temperatures compared to naturally aspirated engines. So, how do they manage this heat?

The use of spiny lock nodular cast-iron liners provides a durable wear surface for the rings, which is important for the engine's longevity. The locking interface also helps to transfer heat from the cylinder to the water jacket.

Another way is through sodium-filled exhaust valve stems and high thermal conductivity valve seats and guides. These components help keep the exhaust valves cool even under intense, high-performance conditions.

Turbocharger Lubrication and Cooling

The turbocharger's symmetrical placement allows priority oil flow from the filter and optimal coolant routing. This configuration supports thermosyphon cooling, which helps keep the turbocharger cooler after the engine is turned off. In more severe conditions, the electric water pump can provide additional after-run cooling. Proper lubrication and effective cooling are essential for ensuring the longevity of the turbocharger.

The Chevy Silverado comes in 9 models: WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, ZR2, and High Country. All models come standard with a TurboMax™ engine and an 8-speed transmission, producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque.

Three other engine options are available:

• 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with a 10-speed transmission: 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque
• 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 with a 10-speed transmission: 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque
• Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel I-6 with a 10-speed transmission: 305 horsepower and 495 lb.-ft. of torque

The maximum trailering weight is 13,300 lbs, and the maximum payload is 2,260 lbs. The Trailering App and the myChevrolet Mobile App with Trailering features are available for added convenience.

The Silverado also includes up to 8 cameras providing up to 14 unique views for comprehensive visibility. You can also choose between the six-function Multi-Flex Tailgate or the power-up/-down tailgate.

In terms of cargo volume, the Long Bed offers 89.1 cu. ft., the Standard Bed provides 71.7 cu. ft., and the Short Bed offers 62.9 cu. ft. Models LT and above feature a 13.4-inch diagonal color touch-screen display and a diagonal 12.3-inch, reconfigurable Driver Information Center. Lastly, the Super Cruise™ hands-free driver assistance technology with Trailering is available as an optional upgrade.

The Silverado offers different seating arrangements to accommodate up to six passengers. The standard Regular Cab configuration seats three people, while the Double Cab and Crew Cab versions accommodate five or six individuals. The Double and Crew cabs come standard with a three-person front bench seat, with optional front captain's chairs for added comfort.

Vinyl upholstery and a front bench seat are the primary seating features, with options for enhancements like cloth or leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated and ventilated front and rear seats.

The Silverado's standard features offer a seamless and enjoyable in-cabin experience. This includes a 7-inch touch screen, a 3.5-inch digital driver information display, wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a two- or six-speaker stereo, depending on the body style.

To further enhance your driving experience, options are available for a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.4-inch touch screen, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a seven-speaker stereo, satellite radio, additional USB ports, proximity keyless entry, remote start, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof.

The Silverado's standard infotainment system is basic but very straightforward. It offers an array of intuitive physical controls, such as knobs and buttons, for ease of use. For a more high-tech experience, the optional larger touchscreen impresses with its smooth operation.
